To truly become the foundational 'world computer' it has long aspired to be, Buterin argues, Ethereum must achieve what he terms 'the rollup-centric roadmap' and solve the 'node resource problem.' This isn't just technical jargon for the crypto-savvy; it's a strategic blueprint for survival and dominance in a landscape increasingly crowded with faster, cheaper, but often more centralized, competitors. The first goal, the rollup-centric roadmap, is essentially Ethereum's answer to its own scalability trilemmaâthe historic challenge of balancing security, decentralization, and scalability.Layer-2 rollups, like Optimism, Arbitrum, and zkSync, process transactions off the main Ethereum chain (Layer-1) and then post compressed proof of those transactions back to it. This allows for dramatically lower fees and higher throughput without sacrificing the bedrock security of Ethereum's base layer.Buterin's vision is for Ethereum to evolve into a settlement layer for these bustling rollup 'neighborhoods,' a secure and neutral foundation upon which an entire ecosystem of scalable applications can be built. The success of this model, however, hinges on continued innovation in zero-knowledge proof technology to make these rollups even more efficient and on ensuring seamless, trust-minimized communication between themâa concept known as interoperability.The second, and perhaps more profound, challenge is the node resource problem. Running a full Ethereum node, which independently verifies the entire blockchain's history and state, currently requires significant storage, bandwidth, and computing power.As the chain grows, this requirement only increases, risking a future where only wealthy institutions or large companies can afford to run nodes. This centralization of node operators is an existential threat to Ethereum's core value proposition: credible neutrality and censorship resistance.Buterin emphasizes that solving this isn't optional; it's imperative.
