In the mundane rhythm of daily life—waiting for a train, preparing a meal, observing the evening light—we face a critical decision. We can, as artist and thinker Rachel Hébert proposes, actively compile a 'catalogue of gratitudes,' embracing the 'bright improbability' of being, or we can remain confined within what she terms the 'cage of complaint.' This is more than a platitude; it is a neuroscientifically-supported practice for mental resilience, a sentiment I've encountered repeatedly in dialogues with educators, healthcare workers, and executives. One school principal described her ritual of noting three concrete, positive moments from her day—a student's breakthrough, the scent of rain on pavement, the comfort of a worn book.This discipline, she clarified, did not negate the systemic challenges she faced but served to train her brain to also register the positive, a form of cognitive restructuring that clinical studies show can mitigate symptoms of stress and burnout. Hébert’s philosophy elevates this into an artistic manifesto, positing that gratitude is the very 'handle of the door to the world.' It is the tool that unlocks the self-made prison of our grievances, granting access to a more vibrant and participatory existence.
