Monumental stone sculptures emerge at Giza Pyramids for Forever is Now.
The stage is set for one of the most breathtaking theatrical productions of our time, not within the velvet-curtained confines of a traditional theater, but under the vast, open sky of the Giza Plateau. As part of Art d’Egypte’s ‘Forever is Now 05’ exhibition, running until December 6th, 2025, artist Alex Proba has unveiled her magnum opus—a collection of monumental stone sculptures that stand in silent, powerful dialogue with the ancient Pyramids themselves. This is Proba’s largest sculptural work to date, a performance in marble, onyx, travertine, and quartzite where the set is four and a half millennia old, and the audience is all of humanity. The sheer audacity of placing contemporary art in the shadow of these timeless monuments is a dramatic act in itself, a bold intermission in the long-running show of human history. One can imagine the creative process as a kind of dress rehearsal, with each massive block of stone being carefully cast for its role, its unique veining and color a costume designed by nature. The onyx, with its translucent layers, catches the desert sun like a stage light, while the solid, imposing quartzite echoes the enduring strength of its ancient co-stars.This is not merely an installation; it is a duet between the artist’s vision and the architects of the Old Kingdom, a conversation across centuries about permanence, beauty, and our place in the cosmos. The ‘Forever is Now’ exhibition itself acts as a visionary producer, consistently creating a platform where the final act of Pharaonic ambition meets the opening night of modern creativity. To witness these new forms—organic, abstract, yet profoundly solid—against the stark geometry of the pyramids is to experience a profound sense of awe, the same feeling one gets when the curtain rises on a masterpiece. It challenges the very definition of a stage, asking whether the greatest theater is not a building, but the world itself, and whether the most powerful performances are those that require no words, only the silent, majestic presence of art in its most enduring form.
