Mert Ege Köse's Reflective Sculpture Recontextualizes the Giza Pyramids
A new reflective aluminum sculpture by Mert Ege Köse has been installed at the Giza Plateau, creating a dynamic conversation between contemporary art and ancient history. The work reinterprets the ancient Egyptian shen ring, a symbol of eternity and protection, by deconstructing its circular form into a computationally designed volume with a precise aperture that frames a view of the pyramids.Crafted from polished aluminum, the sculpture acts as a living mirror, continuously capturing and distorting its surroundings—the desert sky, the sands, and the pyramids themselves—challenging our perceptions of permanence. This site-specific installation, presented by Art d'Egypte, uses reflection and void as tools for reverence, offering a new, technologically-informed lens through which to view the iconic heritage site. The work demonstrates how algorithmic design and digital fabrication can serve as powerful mediums for re-engaging with cultural symbols, suggesting that technology and tradition can collaborate to create resonant new narratives for ancient landscapes.
