Mert Ege Köse's Mirrored Shen Ring Sculpture Recontextualizes the Giza Pyramids
A contemporary artifact now stands in dialogue with the ancient wonders of the Giza Plateau. Turkish artist Mert Ege Köse has installed a monumental, reflective aluminum sculpture that reinterprets the ancient Egyptian shen ring—a symbol of eternity and divine protection.Through computational design, Köse has transformed this two-dimensional hieroglyph into a inhabitable, three-dimensional form whose polished, mirror-like surface actively engages with its environment. The sculpture captures the shifting light of the Egyptian sun, the vast desert sky, and the iconic silhouettes of the pyramids, effectively merging with the landscape it reflects. The piece is conceptually designed to be separated into two halves, creating a curated frame through which viewers can observe the ancient pyramids. This act of framing initiates a powerful conversation between the man-made marvels of the 26th century BC and the artistic language of the 21st century.Presented by Art d’Egypte, the work exemplifies a growing movement where parametric design and digital fabrication draw inspiration from archaeological symbolism. It challenges our perceptions of history, suggesting that modern tools can be used not to overshadow the past, but to illuminate its enduring relevance from an infinite number of new perspectives.
