Budapest Bauhaus Apartment Blends Modern Living with 1930s Soul
Designer Sarolta Huttl has masterfully curated a dialogue between past and present in a 970-square-foot apartment within a restored 1930s Bauhaus villa in Budapest. Rather than imposing a new aesthetic, Huttl approached the renovation as an act of architectural stewardship, allowing the building's original character to guide the design. The villa's inherent Bauhaus principles—'form follows function,' clean lines, and honest use of materials—provided the foundation for a home that is both contemporary and deeply respectful of its history. This careful balance is evident throughout: custom oak shelving is intentionally designed to highlight the original room height, while minimalist kitchen cabinetry in a warm white harmonizes with the aged parquet floors. The iconic corner windows, a signature Bauhaus feature meant to dissolve the barrier between inside and out, remain the heart of the living space, bathing vintage Thonet chairs and a low-profile sofa in soft northern light. 'We are not the first occupants; we are its current custodians,' Huttl remarks, emphasizing a philosophy of resonance over pure restoration. The serene color scheme of off-whites, grays, and earthy tones acts as a quiet backdrop, letting the architecture shine, with occasional vibrant textiles and geometric art nodding to the movement's experimental spirit. The result is a timeless sanctuary that demonstrates how forward-thinking design doesn't erase history but builds a beautiful, thoughtful bridge to it.
