The European Union's declared aspiration to phase out animal testing is a laudable ethical stance, yet it risks remaining little more than aspirational rhetoric unless it is concretely supported by substantial financial investment. Moving beyond traditional animal models necessitates a concerted and costly effort to develop, validate, and scale up innovative alternative methodologies, encompassing everything from advanced in vitro techniques and organ-on-a-chip technologies to sophisticated computational toxicology models.Such a paradigm shift demands not only significant research grants for scientific innovation but also considerable funding for the comprehensive training of scientists in these novel approaches, alongside the establishment of robust regulatory frameworks that can swiftly and confidently integrate non-animal methods into safety assessments. Without dedicated budgetary allocations to fuel this complex transition, the EU’s commendable ambition, however well-intentioned, will inevitably falter, leaving both ethical imperatives and scientific progress unfulfilled.
