NOCD expands into PTSD therapy with Rebound acquisition under Noto brand.
When Stephen Smith founded NOCD over a decade ago, his mission was deeply personal: to create a tool for the millions, including himself, grappling with obsessive-compulsive disorder. That initial vision for symptom tracking has evolved dramatically.By 2018, NOCD had pivoted to providing virtual therapy, specializing in exposure and response prevention (ERP), and now delivers over a million sessions a year to patients covered by major insurers. The company's latest move, however, signals a bold expansion beyond its original scope. In a strategic acquisition finalized last November, NOCD has brought Rebound Health, a platform focused on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma, into its fold. Both entities will now operate under a new parent brand named Noto, which is also the AI-powered software engine that has driven NOCD's growth to a $270 million valuation and its first quarter of positive cash flow last year. This isn't just corporate rebranding; it's a logical clinical progression. Smith's team noticed a significant overlap in their user base—individuals suffering from both OCD and PTSD—and had already trained about a hundred of their therapists in prolonged exposure (PE) therapy, a cousin to ERP.Seeing strong outcomes, the goal became scaling this treatment rapidly. Rebound, founded in 2023 by CEO Raeva Kumar, who has personal experience with PTSD, and clinical co-founder Erin Berenz, offered the perfect vehicle.Their self-guided platform will now be integrated with Noto's infrastructure to launch 'Rebound Therapy,' a live service expected within months. The playbook here is fascinating: use proprietary AI (Noto) to identify misdiagnosed patients and streamline payer enrollment, then deploy a scaled network of specialists for complex, exposure-based therapies. Smith hints this could be a template for adding more specialty areas in the future, suggesting NOCD's foundation in treating a 'complex, hidden, but treatable population' might just be the beginning of a much larger telehealth story.
